ICT Profile of Students as Predictor to ICT Education

I have presented my research paper last Thursday, March 15, 2007 at the Bulwagang Balagtas at the NALRC, PUP. I felt good after my presentation, I realized that it’s not enough to work on research but it must also be shared to the people concerned. The First Engineering Research Conference with the theme: “Engineers, Engineering, Re-Engineering: Facing the Challenges of Research and Development” at the Ninoy Aquino Leaning and Resource Center at PUP, Manila from March 12-16 2007 gave me this opportunity and motivated me to conduct more researches.

This research was done with the partnership of my good friend Pedrito M. Tenerife Jr., he provided the interpretation of the data gathered and help me make the final paper for this research that will be published in a research journal.


THE ICT PROFILE OF FOURTH YEAR COE STUDENTS
AS PREDICTOR TO ICT EDUCATION

Abstract:

The rapid rate of information and Communication Technology (ICT) post a new challenge in the educational system of the country, that is how these ICT form of technology (like blogs, podcasts and video materials) could harnessed the efficient delivery of instruction that will facilitate the provision of a more suitable and competent quality of instruction which eventually would yield greater possible learning facility to students. As ICT becomes the integral part that educational institution should capitalized on the beneficial effect of ICT to teaching and learning.

As a state university which is a service provider of quality education to its marginalized clientele, it would be imperative to assess the ICT profile of our students and determine how these forms of technology could be accessed by them. Likewise, it is also significant to note how these technologies could aid in the facility of efficient and practical learning to them. This research seeks to show how relevant the ICT profile and the accessibility of ICT form of technologies to students.

The research utilizes a sample size of one hundred eighty-nine (189) fourth (4th) year BSCmpE students. The direct interview and questionnaire method was administered to them.

Statement of the Problem
The research seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:
a. sex
b. age
c. income bracket
2. What ICT Technologies are availed of / owned by the respondents?
3. What are the service providers that caters the student need for:
a. computer use
b. access to the internet
4. What internet service connections are availed by the respondents?
5. What are the respondent’s reason for the use of the:
a. computer
b. internet
6. What is the respondents’ perception in terms of the following:
a. willingness to study online
b. willingness to use other form of technologies as learning kit
c. topics that could be learn online
7. What is the respondent’s perception on e-learning tools?


Summary of the Findings

The aims to assess the ICT profile of the 4th year BSCmpE students and determine how these forms of technologies could aid them in the facility of efficient and practical learning.
The following are the salient findings of this research study :
1. The respondents of this study are one hundred twenty four male and sixty female BSCmpE 4th year students. The respondents included in this research are predominantly young. This can be attested by the combined frequencies of the two youngest age bracket which is 29. The respondents income profile projects that 91 or 49.46 percent are categorized into the middle or the lowest income brackets ( Below P 10,000 and P10,000 -14,999).
2. Desktop computers, mobile phone (with or without digital camera), DVD player, MP3 player and USB/Flash disk are the most common technologies availed or owned by the students.
3. PC rental shop is the most common way of the students access to computers and internet.
4. Academic and school work related research, games and entertainment, and Internet access are the most common reasons why the students use computers. Academic and school work related research, Email, entertainment, internet chat, music downloading, and personal interests, and hobbies, software downloads, and web surfing and experimenting are common reasons why students access the internet.
5. Dial-up and DSL are the internet connections that are used by the students in internet browsing.
6. Respondents are willing to learn on-line and use other form of technology as learning-kit. The respondents want to learn the topics computer hardware, software and applications online.
7. The respondents prefer the ICT technologies to be used as a supplementary materials for the classroom instruction.

Conclusion
The researchers conclude that the students have access to the internet and the desktop computers are the most commonly used by them. Instructors may send/upload their lectures online since the students are willing to learn online but as a supplementary aid in classroom teaching.

Recommendation
1. Have the survey done yearly or if possible every semester to regularly assess the technologies used and availed by the students and instructors.
2. Have trainings and seminars on these technologies (like blogs, podcasts and video materials) for the students and instructors so that they can acquire the capabilities and skills needed to harness the power of ICT so that they can be used as a medium of instruction.
3. Prepare instructional materials that will be available in these technologies.

Engineering Research Conference 2007

The College of Engineering, PUP is celebrating this week an important milestone in their quest for academic excellence by having the First Engineering Research Conference at the Ninoy Aquino Leaning and Resource Center at PUP, Manila from March 12-16 2007.
The theme for the conference is “Engineers, Engineering, Re-Engineering: Facing the Challenges of Research and Development”. The college aims to harness the gratifying benefits of research and development to offer to the university and its students an R & D driven engineering education.

The week long event is participated not just by the academic community but also with the government and private sectors as well. The Department of Science and Technology DOST and Commission on Higher Education CHED presented their policies on how they can help the academic community in their researches and also shared their knowledge in the field of engineering on the development of the country, Accenture and SMART also presented their plans in supporting the academic community in their endeavor.

The conference serves as a venue where the academic community, from PUP and other colleges and universities can present their researches in the various fields of engineering and ICT, as an academic I will be presenting my paper, titled “The ICT Profile of 4th year Computer Engineering students as a PREDICTOR to ICT EDUCATION” on Thursday March 15, 2007 and will blog more about it on the coming days.

The Conference is about the field of Engineering but one might ask what is its relevance or relation to ICT? We live and breathe ICT or Information and Communications Technology (Internet, Mobile Communications, digital equipments, etc.) today in our daily lives and engineering is the design, analysis and construction of a certain body of work for a specific purpose. The application of this engineering concepts in ICT ensures that the information systems and information management is working as it should be.

Software Reengineering or Reverse engineering is one of the most important activities done today in the business industry. As businesses automate to their activities they need the reengineering process to achieve this, it involves the examination and alteration of a system(manual business system) to reconstitute it in a new form (automated/computerized/networked system). As more and more businesses become automated the demands for these kind services increases. Businesses can choose to develop their own systems or outsource its to companies specializing in business process outsourcing services or knowledge process outsourcing.

Throughout the conference activities the attendees are encouraged to be involve in researches specially in the field of emerging technologies like ICT and make this researches something that can be used by the people or contribute to the world’d body of knowlegde. I believe that researches in the field of software engineering is still small and maybe in the future I can have a research in this field where I can contribute to the ICT community.
